Scary Stories and Highway Legends in Ohio
Halloween season is here, and many of us plan our haunted house and pumpkin patch trips. But what if we told you there is some pretty scary stuff in this state, with real ghosts instead of people dressed up like ‘em? Ohio is a state that is full of history and stories, but there are also some scary places in Ohio that you can visit this fall. While we can’t tell you for sure whether the tales are true, you can go see for yourself!
If you're going to Ohio, stop at Moonville Tunnel. Located in McArthur, the tunnel is haunted by the ghost of Frank Lawhead—a railroad worker. He died when he fell into a hole on the tracks and was killed by an oncoming train. Today, locals say that if you go into Moonville Tunnel late at night and turn off all of your lights, you will see his ghost standing near one of them, waiting for you.
Moonville is also said to be haunted by another spirit: a mysterious train that appears out of nowhere (and disappears just as quickly). People have reported hearing loud screeching noises from inside the tunnel before spotting headlights toward them; others report smelling burning coal or seeing fireballs flying over their heads—but never actually seeing any kind of locomotive or machinery besides an old lantern hanging from inside it!
The Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield was built in 1886 and closed its doors in 1990. The prison was the backdrop for the Shawshank Redemption.
The Reformatory was known for its brutal conditions and harsh punishments. Many inmates sentenced there to spend the rest of their lives died within its walls due to disease or suicide—which explains why people claim some of them still haunt it today!
Franklin Castle isn't open to tours or visitors (sorry), but if you're ever driving past downtown Cleveland and want an eerie story to tell later that evening at dinner parties or family gatherings (or just everyday life), look up! You might see some lights flickering down there, or even a woman in black…
This Lighthouse is located in Put-in-Bay and is one of the oldest lighthouses in Ohio. You can walk the grounds, but it is closed to the public now. The Lighthouse is said to be haunted after the mysterious death of a visitor.
As you can see, Ohio has a lot of scary stories and urban legends. While some are clearly false, others have been around for so long that they must be based on something true. Whether or not the stories are real doesn't matter much when it comes down to it—they're still fun to hear! If you're looking for an adventure this Halloween season, check out one (or all) of these locations for yourself. Who knows? Maybe you'll find something new that hasn't been written about before…
